Hospital Bag Checklist

6 picks · What you actually open in those 48 hours.

Most hospital bag lists are padded with things you will never unzip. The hospital supplies diapers, wipes, pads and usually a swaddle; what it does not supply is anything that makes recovery comfortable, or a phone charger that reaches the bed. Pack for two people and three days, and put the postpartum recovery items on top — they are the ones you need first and the ones nobody warns you about. Everything below is small, cheap and used within the first 48 hours.

Hospital Bag: common questions

When should you pack a hospital bag?

Pack it by 36 weeks. About one in ten babies arrives before 37 weeks, and a packed bag is one decision you do not have to make while in labour. Keep it by the door or in the car.

What does the hospital actually give you?

Most hospitals provide diapers, wipes, a swaddle blanket, a hat, mesh underwear, heavy-duty pads, a peri bottle, and basic formula if needed. They won’t provide comfortable clothing, decent toiletries, snacks, a long phone cable, or a going-home outfit.

What should a partner pack?

Pack snacks, a refillable water bottle, their own phone charger, a pillow from home, a change of clothes, and something to sleep in. Labour is long and hospital cafeterias close.
